Earthrise is an autobiography about Edgar Mitchell who was a pilot on the historic 1971 Apollo 14. He was the sixth person to walk on the moon.

Mitchell was born in Hereford, TX. on September 17, 1930. He moved to Roswell, NM when he was five. He was a farm boy who was responsible for taking care of most of the farm animals and was often doing chores. When he was older he worked on engines that gave him confidence that he later put to use to becoming a pilot and an astronaut.

One day when Mitchell was four, a barnstormer (daredevil flyer) ran out of gas and landed in a cotton field near his home. When the flyer refilled he took young Edgar, his father and aunt on a flight. When Mitchell was 14 he worked on planes and instead of getting paid he learned how to fly one.

He went to college at Carnegie Tech in Pennsylvania. He met his wife Louise and enlisted to the Korean War. On October 4, 1957, Mitchell was coming home from the military when he heard about a satellite that was being launched by the Russians that was called Sputnik. He knew he wanted to be a pilot in nonviolent ways.

I think that this book is for ages 8+ and anyone who likes space. This book deserves a rating of 4.7 stars out of 5 and could easily become a New York Times bestseller. If you want a good quick read about space, this is the one. Earthrise can relate to the movie Gravity but with different people on a different mission.

This book is a journey of a young farm boy who became a licensed pilot at age 16. Edgar Mitchell went into the Navy and went to the moon on the Apollo 14 space ship. These are some of the reasons to check out this book. I encourage you to read Earthrise My Adventures As an Apollo 14 Astronaut.
