This summer, Denver will host the 2014 World Lacrosse Championship Tournament. A record 38 teams will be competing this summer, with Team USA competing on home soil for the first time since 1998 when the tournament came to Baltimore.
The United States has won nine of the eleven championships since the tournament began, including the most recent tournament. Canada has claimed the other two championships. These two powerhouses will meet in the first game played during the group-stage of the tournament.
The field of 38 consists of many returning teams, as well as nine teams that are new to the tournament. The new teams include Belgium, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Israel, Russia, Thailand, Turkey and Uganda. Uganda will become the first ever African nation to compete in the tournament. The rest of the field will be made up by the following nations: Argentina, Austria, Australia, Bermuda, Czech Republic, England, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Ireland, Iroquois Nationals, Japan, South Korea, Latvia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Scotland, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and Wales.
The Iroquois Nationals will make an appearance in the tournament following an absence in the 2010 tournament. In 2010, the team had to forfeit their games after the United Kingdom refused to accept their tribal passports, demanding that they get passports issued by the United States. This year, the Iroquois Nation will be able to compete since the tournament is in the United States.
The tournament will take place July 10-19 at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. The games will primarily take place on the many fields outside the stadium. Some group-stage games will take place inside the stadium as well. The final rounds will also be inside the stadium.
The tournament is a once in a lifetime opportunity for lacrosse fans and a great opportunity to create new fans, too.
