It is hard to land on your feet when the world turns upside down. When a family is separated it is hard for kids to understand how to deal with the changes.
It is hard to land on your feet when the world turns upside down. When a family is separated it is hard for kids to understand how to deal with the changes. One way to at least land on one foot is by reading the American Girl’s, Smart Girl’s Guide to her Parents’ Divorce. Sorry boys, it’s for girls.
Like all of the other books in the American Girl Smart Girls series, this book includes quizzes, tips, and advice from other girls. The advice is probably the most helpful part of the book. Some of the chapters in this book include: Mixed Emotions, Jealous, Told Nothing, How Divorce Works, and many others. It also makes sure you know that it’s all going to be alright. The truest part about this book is this: It is NOT your fault. That is absolutely true. Another truth is that divorces will always be different, this is mentioned in the book on multiple occasions.
This book has very helpful advice, but I would say that if you are 12 or older, find another source. You will probably want more detail. If you’re under 12, great; then this is the book for you.
This book may also be a help to those that are not currently in this situation, but have a friend who is. It’s a great book to sit down with your friend and talk over. This would also give you an idea of what it would be like to be in her shoes. You would be able to comfort any friend with two homes.
I highly recommend this book for its reassurance and truth. We all need to know how to land on our feet, and The Girl’s Guide to her Parents’ Divorce is a book that will help that happen.
