Giada De Laurentiis is not only a star of several food network programs, but a terrific author. One of her books, Recipe for Adventure: Naples! is a must read novel about an Italian family. I would recommend this book anyone ages 9+, because some words are written in Italian, so younger kids might not understand why or they might not comprehend the story. The recipe out of the book I made, called zeppoles, was very difficult. To make the yummy donut like treat, you must have:

  • 1/2 cup sugar (plus 3 tablespoons)
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg (the secret ingredient)
  • 1 stick of butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup flour
  • 4 eggs
  • olive oil (for frying)

Have an adult read through the directions BEFORE you start making the recipe. When you heat the olive oil for frying, make sure it is o a medium heat, because if the temperature is too high it may set off the fire alarm (and yes, that did happen while we were making the recipe). To make the zeppoles you will need two bowls, one saucepan, an electric hand mixer (a whisk works too), a frying pan, a deep fry thermometer (a meat thermometer works too) and a lot of patience. When you make this dessert, you must have a lot of time. It takes 20 minutes to prepare, and 30 minutes to actually cook.

I thought the book Recipe for Adventure: Naples was breathtaking and was full of adventure. I believe many people would enjoy this book, not only kids. Inside the novel, there are two recipe cards, one for zeppoles and one for tomato basil pizza. The pizza certainly looked easier to make, but it has more ingredients. In conclusion, Giada de Laurentiis' Recipe for Adventure: Naples! is a one of a kind book with many cooking adventures.
