Mitch Larson, author of “Pennyroyal Academy,” was recently at the MPIBA Fall Discovery Show and spoke with Colorado Kids.
Asked what inspired him to write “Pennyroyal Academy,” Larson said he was trying to think of ideas for TV shows, and came up with “Princess Bootcamp”, a show about girls training to be princesses. The show got to the point where people were auditioning for voices, but then fizzled.
One of Larson’s friend suggested that he turn his idea into a book and, eight years later, “Pennyroyal Academy” emerged.

Larson said that, when he was younger, he never dreamed of being anything but a book author, but as he got older, he began writing movies instead of books and went to film school. After college, he began writing episodes of “My Little Pony” and other shows.

Asked which he liked writing more, books or TV scripts, Larson responded, “They’re so different. When you write a script, you have to write 30 pages and you have half an hour. Books have no limits, and that’s kind of scary, because there’s almost too many options. It’s easier to write scripts.”

“Pennyroyal Academy” is a gripping book and wonderful for anyone who enjoys fantasies about princesses, witches, knights, and dragons, but even writers have their doubts. “I’m afraid that I’ll open the book and see that I missed something or I’ll say, ‘Oh, I messed that up!’ or, ‘I should have done it like that!’” Larson said.

To make this book appeal to boys as well as girls, Larson decided to add knights. “I knew I wanted boys in there,” he said, “but I couldn’t think of much to do with princes. So I decided on knights, because then I could have the knights fight dragons.”

Larson says his next step is to finish the second book, which is coming out next winter. He’s also working on some more episodes for “My Little Pony.”

Mitch Larson is a funny guy and a creative author. “Pennyroyal Academy” is a spectacular novel, especially for his first, and I encourage all who love fantasy to read it.
