Carter Benson, the main character in “Stranded Shadow Island (Book 1: Forbidden Passage)” by Jeff Probst and Chris Tebbetts, is stranded on Shadow Island with his three brave siblings. The four preteens will have to overcome the obstacles that lie ahead of them.
Carter, Vanessa, Jane, Buzz, and their parents find themselves stranded on an island that Jane, the youngest Benson, named “Nowhere Island.” But as the four siblings head out to fish for food, the boat they are on floats out into the middle of the ocean, leaving their parents behind.
After many days of floating in the water, they finally land on a mysterious island. As they explore this “new” island, each sibling encounters a very strange person that speak a strange language. Eventually, the Benson children meet a strong, muscular man named Ani. This man leads them to the village of the “Nukula” people, who speak the language of “Nukula.” These people live in secret, which is why the island’s name is “Shadow Island.”
Ani explains to the siblings that they will have to complete a test called the Raku Nau, which is a passage from youth to adulthood. Winning the competition is their only chance of returning home.
There is one Nukula, named Chizo, who is also trying to complete the Raku Nau and challenges the four siblings to the race. The Bensons will have to work together as a family to overcome the many obstacles to beat Chizo and complete the challenge so they can return home.
I found “Stranded Shadow Island” to be a simple, quick and fun read for both boys and girls who like adventures! I would recommend this story to ages 8 and up. The authors used many awesome adjectives to help the reader “be in” the story. The book has so many twists and turns that will want to make you keep turning the pages.
