The first book in the series The Land of Stories: The Wishing Spell by Chris Colfer, is amusing and adventurous.

Alex and Conner Bailey are 11 years olds twins that are not alike. Alex is smart, attentive, and is always reading a book in her free time. Conner, on the other hand is the opposite: Conner always falls asleep in class, always gets detention, never gets good grades, and NEVER does his homework.

However alike that Alex and Conner may not be, they still liked to do one thing — which was listen to their Grandma reading them Fairy Tale stories from her Fairy Tale book; The Land of Stories.

On the night of Alex and Conner's birthday, their grandmother gives them her storybook of The Land of Stories insisting that she didn’t need it anymore. Much to Alex’s bewilderment, she discovers that the book glows and hums! While Alex is determined to figure out what the book is, Conner is contempt on tossing The Land of Stories into a river. In all of this confusion, Alex and Conner accidentally fall into the book and they find themselves in the real Land of Stories where all of the fairy tales are real.

Alex and Conner suddenly find themselves in a mysterious and dark forest where a man with a real frog head tells them a way they can go home. However, the way that the Frog-Man told them was the way of the Wishing Spell. By collecting eight specific objects, the fairies would grant you one wish, any wish that the heart desired; and in this case, going home to the real world. However, many dangers await Alex and Conner; will they collect all the items of the Wishing Spell before anyone else?

I would recommend this book for ages 10 and up because of some bad words and inappropriate language. The Land of Stories has lots of humor, especially when Alex and Conner travel into the fairy tale world. Overall, this book is one of my favorites.
