“The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water” puts a new twist on the popular TV series, “Spongebob Squarepants,” which first aired 15 years ago. Even if you aren’t a big fan of nautical nonsense, this is a must-see film. It’s a mix of cartoon, live action, and computer animation. If you layer on the ingredients to the patty plot, there are a few things that have been changed from the TV show: a seagull-hating pirate chef, a time-traveling dolphin, and a post-apocalyptic Bikini Bottom. The recipe for a tasty plot follows Spongebob and his pals (Patrick Star, Squidward Tentacles, Mr. Krabs, Plankton, and Sandy Cheeks) on a quest to get the Krabby Patty Secret Formula back from the evil pirate who stole it. Even Plankton, arch nemesis of secret formula owner Mr. Krabs, has a change of heart thanks to Spongebob, and helps them try to get the formula back.
There’s something for all ages to enjoy, including adult puns, sword fights, and superheroes. There was at least one age bracket laughing almost the entire way through. I would recommend this film for families looking for a group outing because there’s something for everyone. Those who are Spongebob “regular customers” will recognize some references to some of the TV episodes. At the end of the movie, I was craving a Krabby Patty, but I had to settle for a regular hamburger instead.
