Eric Colossal brings a fantastical, mystical and also slightly confusing new world to life with his new graphic novel; Rutabaga: The Adventure Chef!

Rutabaga is an Adventure Chef, or a chef who travels the land looking for rare ingredients for new and exciting dishes, because the standard ingredients in markets were too, well, standard. Anything needed to make a spectacular meal he finds himself.

When Rutabaga follows a small hunting group he meets his future friends: Winn, Manny, and Beef. After a quick pep potion, they allow Rutabaga to come along so he can finally savor roast dragon.

After an incident involving a melted dragon sword, a whole dragon egg (yummy!) and lots and lots of running, they make everything right and head home to their castle.

There are lots of other adventures after it, but it would be rude to spoil them all. All I will say is that Rutabaga has many escapades ranging from feeding a sleepy little lizard to traveling with some mighty Fnard hunters.

I really like this book for lots of reasons, the first being the humor. Eric Colossal has witty scenes from inhaling flower candy, to meeting a king for the first time, even picking giant exploding mushrooms!

I also liked the recipes that are featured. Rutabaga has recipes for a whole variety of foods, such as Roasted Koranis Spirals and Kings Head Squash Soup. I also found some real recipes that readers would enjoy cooking.

I think that Eric Colossal’s book is an engaging read that will challenge the humor as well as the taste buds. So, as Rutabaga would say, “Let’s get cooking!”
