World Famous Ranger’s Apprentice Author Visits Denver

On Monday, October 19th, best-selling Australian author John Flanagan visited the downtown Tattered Cover Book Store for a lecture and book signing event. He was promoting his new book, a prequel to the Ranger’s Apprentice Series, called “The Tournament at Gorlan (Ranger’s Apprentice: The Early Years).”

Over 60 people were in attendance, many of whom were young fans of Mr. Flanagan. There are 12 books in the Ranger’s Apprentice Series and 4 books in the Brotherband Chronicles series. He has also written 2 mystery books (in his Jesse Parker series) that are based in Steamboat Springs and Utah.

I was lucky enough to spend about 20 minutes with him before his public appearance. He told me that the original name for the Ranger’s Apprentice series was Arathon, but then, his publishers told him that it was too close to the names in Lord of the Rings.

During his presentation, Mr. Flanagan was funny, engaging, and very open about his past. He told many stories about his work and personal life. He also said that last week, this new book reached #5 on the New York Times best seller list!!! One funny story that he shared was based on someone’s question. A little girl asked him if he could be a character in his book, who would he be? He answered that he would be Baron Arald because this character told lame jokes and had to do barely anything in the story (Book 1: Ruins of Gorlan).

Although he is a best selling author now, he originally had 8 books rejected before he was published. He told everyone “Do not give up.” He mentioned that “J.K. Rowling was rejected 13 times” before she was first published (author of the Harry Potter series of books).

He also informed everyone during the question and answer session that more books are coming. For example, he said that he is making a new prequel to the Ranger’s Apprentice series. It is three short stories, including adventures of Crowley and Halt. Mr. Flanagan also said that he is working on more Brotherband Chronicle books in the near future.

Many fans are wondering if there will be a Ranger’s Apprentice movie. He said YES!!!
